Rap Round Encore

14 August 2010

This year’s Rap Round Robin had a great line-up: Food For Animals, AK Slaughter, Rap Dragons, Height With Friends, Mickey Free, King Rhythm, The Plural MC, PT Burnem, and Jones. The crowd was pumped, surrounded by four sound stages of beats and rhymes. After the final set, the crowd chanted, “one more round." And for those that ventured to the stairwell, there was an encore performance, a rough-on-the edges battle.

A half hour freestyle broke out in the stairwell of the H&H between Rap Dragons, Mickey Free, PT Burnem, Sam Herring (Future Islands) and his brother Joel. The walls transformed into the drum track, and the stairs echoed with improvised lyrical spitfire. Rap Dragons’ Greg Ward stole the competition with witty, quick comebacks. As he put it: “If there’s one thing I like more than weed, it’s a battle”.

The Round Robin was good, but the unexpected freestyle trumped it.
