Hot Damn.

23 August 2010

The International Lindy Hop Championships swung unto effect this past weekend in Alexandria, VA.

Thursday through Sunday the local Westin was overrun with Lindy Hoppers from across the US as well as solid showing from Canad

a, France, Sweden, and an Aussie for good measure. ILHC, as it is known, is part of a string of year-round vernacular Jazz dance conferences where Lindy Hoppers, Blues Dancers, Balboa lovers, and their kin come together to take classes, partake in fr

iendly competition, and dance until the sun comes up. Classes don't start until 11 am most days as a nod to the 5 am jam sessions that break out after the DJ has shut down, and after the live band called it quits. Most of the teachers ar

e quite young (twenties & thirties), considering the various cults of personality that surround them. Many of these young masters cite training with the late Frankie Manning, the man credited with reviving an international interest and appreciation for

Lindy Hop. Many of the classes came down to connecting one's personal style and musical interpreation to the backbone of the rythmic pulse; an apprecation for the contrast of subtle sweetness with sweaty strength.

Some of the most exciting moments are already up on youtube.
