Swingin' with the Syncopators
6 July 2010
This past week Glenn Cryzter and the Syncopators tore up regular swing dance spots in B’more and DC. Cryzter and crew pound home the importance of the original elements of jazz music: imrpovised play and animated exchange between dancers and musicians.
Glenn Cryzter blogs about playing jazz for dancers on his My Jazz Can Beat Your Jazz. In a thorough posting form March 3, 2010, Cryzter explains the musical developments that paralleled the dance history of the 20th century, from Charleston to Bebop. Crytzer and crew have a few more dates on the east coast before heading back to Seattle and New Orleans. If you can catch up with them in DC, NJ, or Philly, be sure to request their version of "If You're a Viper." Though not their most intricate track, it's a bawdy sing-&-dance-a-long that brings out their boyish charm. Listen close for originals as well as a peppy version of "Sweet Sue."
