for pluto dances, we focused on using counts/numbers to measure phrases of movement. the dance had a lot do with grouping or taxonomy. 9 planets down to 8. we measured our movement in phrases of 9, 8 and 6. and the music had crazy polyrythms to match. now that we know we can do that --choreograph with counts -- we're going back to what's comfortable and really disectiing our habits, finding the edges, and researching there. for some of us in the company, our first choice when it comes to measuring phrases of movement, is to make up little songs. it helps us with timing and dynamics. the phrase from the video is an example of this. the quality and length of each movement has a sound that's part of the song. we haven't done anything much with it yet. there are lots of cool dances out there that involve dancer vocalization. but we're headed more in the direction of how knowing what the movement sounds like in our heads affects our bodies.
