Three Penny Opera - Annex Theater Style
10 November 2011
Props wizards, projection masters, and costume savants give this version of thee penny a befitting post-industrial metallic sheen. Director Evan Moritz shows us straight up how many of Brecht's themes echo, and clank-bang, around our contemporary society.
What musical director Walker Tenet has done with the original Three Penny score is bad ass. There's synth. There's hawaiian guitar. There's cello.
And the acting is pretty much bonkers. Mack the Knife has got swag. And you don't want to go anywhere near that Peachum couple...
Full disclosure, I (Lily) was luck enough to be invited to throw in a bit of blocking and a dash of choreography.
Sitting in the autograph for this haunting, critical, and sassy produciton is a whole different experience than lasers and blood Baltiomre Rock Opera Socirty spectacles that restored the old Showtime Theater to current Autograph Theater glory. Worth witnessing. Check it out.
