Dear Everyone/ First Time Visitor
27 September 2011
Hi everyone who will visit our site in the next few days after the City Paper article comes out.
I'm glad you've come for a visit. Google analytics tells me that when the CP writes something about us, hits to our website jump. It makes sense.
So, I wanted to share some things with you:
1. OPEN CLASS.
Effervescent hosts an Open Class every Sunday at the Baltimore School of Dance at 4001 Falls Rd in Hampden. Usually, I'm teaching, but sometimes folks from the company, or class regulars, also share their experience. We put a priority on learning from physical sensation (not visual information from mirrors) and the freedom to listen and respond, without having to memorize anything. We always move for a full hour, uninterrupted. Anyone is welcome. Please consider donating a few bucks to the teacher when you come to class. Literally, you hand your $$ to the teacher. It's a person to person interaction. Amy Hornberger at the BSD has shown unprecedented hospitality and solidarity by helping to host us.
2. SPACE
We are looking for a new permanent home. The Lumberhaus, our previous nest, a collaboratively run home for experimental dance, didn't work out for a variety of reasons. But if you know of a spot with wood floors that's over 1600 square ft, and can be heated and cooled with the seasons, please use the contact us link at the top to let me know about it and start a conversation. There are several other awesome groups looking to go into a new space with us. Just waiting for the right spot.
3. SUPPORT
Stuff we could really use:
1. Money (for studio rental and stuff). Click the donate online button if you're able.
2. Help with updating and trouble shooting our websites. The first is this one, which just needs to be reorgnized. But some graphic design skills and labor and creativity would be cool. The second is bmoredancehub.org. I got an Ignite Baltimore grant to start it up last winter. I want to schedule an open feedback session where all different kinds of potential users can let me know why and how it could be more awesome. But also, the talented feller who made it, has his hands full with a paying jobs. So we need someone who has time and talent to donate internet magic. Again, contact me if any of this interests you.
3. We also always need stuff like duct tape, light bulbs, swiffers, paint, a sewing machine, snack food, snakc drinks, a big ladder, a cordless drill, you know, stuff for building other stuff. And we like when people help us build stuff too.
4. MISSY ELLIOT. MOST IMPORTANT.
I want to make a music video with Missy Elliot. Can anyone make that happen for me?
5. I really ilke to read, write, and talk about dances and dancing, and how different kinds of movement systems and technologies (woah, big words) influence and are influenced by politics, religion, pop culture, sneezes, etc. There's a lot of awesome overlooked books out there about this stuff, tucked away in corners of other niches ranging from jazz history, to nationalism, to new media technology and stuff. if you like thinking and talking about this stuff too, poke around the website, and be in touch.
Thanks a lot.
Much love,
Lily
